Process

Nothing begins with a drawing.

The work develops through intuition, material, memory and time.

The wood comes first. It may be reclaimed, distressed, weathered, found while walking or discovered somewhere unexpected. Steve turns it, studies it and waits for a direction to emerge.

Then come the stones—crystal, amethyst, turquoise, agate, amber and other gemstones and found materials gathered over years. Their monetary value is secondary. What matters is whether a particular stone belongs in the piece.

There is no blueprint. Some sculptures assemble quickly; others change over months or years. A piece may be set aside and revisited long after it first appeared complete.

Done for the moment.

For Steve, completion is not necessarily permanent. The possibility that a work may still become something more is part of the process itself.
